During this month's Eat Local Challenge ( http://www.eatlocalchallenge.com/2007... ) I've been buying quite a bit from the Ortiz brothers stand at various farmers markets. At last Thursday's night market in San Rafael, I was happy to find some just-picked green beans, when most of the other stands had little greenery to offer. They grow a wide variety of produce and flowers, and if you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to ask, as they'll often have it tucked away in the van. I like the one-stop shopping aspect, and especially appreciate that I can buy organic carrots, leeks, cilantro, and scallions here, the pantry basics. That said, they also have some more esoteric things, including squash blossoms.
Ortiz with display of flor de calabaza -
I've found Ortiz at Saturday morning's market in Healdsburg, Sunday in Windsor, Thursday evening in Cotati (finished for the season), and Thursday night in San Rafael (last market this week). Returning from Jones Rabbit Farm, I noticed the Ortiz farmstand on Stony Point road, south of town, but didn't have time to stop. I asked one of the ladies in San Rafael about the hours, and she said it's open every day and all day. Someone lives on the property and is always available to help you.
