I am all for the new L.A. bread culture touted in the Times today. Artisnal is always nice. Something rich folks eat every day or the rest of us eat with special dinners and so forth. But this is BREAD, fer chrissakes, Peasant food. Where do I go for an ordinary load of good brown bread to serve with soup? Not too much added gluten would be nice but I am really at a loss on the East Side of LA. Panaderias galore, but cuernos don't cut it with pot au feu.
I am sorry to say it but Masa in Echo Park's a let down for bread. Really awful, actually, though other things are good there.
