Orchard Run, Only Sold at Graber Olive House (Ontario)

On the way back from Stagecoach in the desert, I had a chance to stop by Graber Olive House, my first visit to Ontario. No tour available at that hour, but an employee was rounded up to show me through the factory. Well worth the time, here are some photos of the factory and museum.

This was also the opportunity to purchase “Orchard Run” olives sold only at Graber Olive House, a tip I’d received from a native Angeleno. Orchard Run includes a mix of sizes outside the standard pack and sells for $3.95 per can. From my admittedly small sample, this pack includes both larger and smaller than the standard but mostly in-between. The selection seems to have a few more darker olives that are a bit softer and some blemished ones. They have the same unique tree-ripe Graber olive taste and the discount makes it easier to enjoy them more frequently.

Graber olives do a great job in counteracting tannins in young wines, even better than rare beef. That’s how I was originally introduced to them more than a decade ago. At the time, the only retailers in the SF Bay Area who carried Grabers were in Napa and Sonoma counties to serve the wine industry. The only problem is, folks get distracted by the olives and neglect the wines. Per this photo (taken in a dark bar) of a bowl full of Orchard Run, the guy sitting next to me at the table had already eaten eight olives and we hadn’t poured the wines yet.

I bought 30 cans to drive home with me, figuring that would be a two-year supply. In less than two months, I’ve already gone through six cans, so probably not.
