Went to Olives tonite for a birthday dinner with just the gals (an annual ritual) Was looking forward to some culinary delights headed by Mr. Todd English of Olives fame in Boston (and several other locations now)
Reaction is mixed. Place is mobbed beyond belief. Could not get a reservation through normal means (hitting redial 100 times while surfing the web. Had to have cool guy "inside person" make the res with no trouble at all 4 days ago which is SO annoying as you know they had a table when I called 4 weeks ahead.
Service is very slow and uninterested. We ordered individual drinks ( I had a Cosmo and the rest had an apple martini a piece) They were ordinary and on thelarge side which is good since our waitress came around twice in over two hours.
We went with apps...tuna tartare- very good but too much cilantro..could border excellent if altered slightly with spices
sauteed artickokes-good but too crunchy and grainy in the potato base...overall flavor yummy
pasta with wild mushrooms-ave at best(friend had but i tasted)
entrees were interesting yet expensive and we liked the apps better (nothing to do with price..we LOVE paying for good eats)
portions in general very small but not fair for me to say overall as most of my party ordered two apps a piece for dinner total
dessert cake was served in honor of b-day and was some mocha choc thing that was really tasty..all in all...food has serious potential
the W hotel thing is a neg in MYHO as it is way to sceney and annoying. Had such a fab meal at English' place at the Inn at National Hall in CT that I was dying to try this place... Dont like hotel bars that are packed and draw an unruly outside new york crowd ( i cant wait to catch heat on that comment)
