olazzo / cafe gelato in bethesda

Had lunch at Olazzo (on Norfolk) and dessert at Cafe Gelato (on St Elmo).

At Olazzo, everyone ordered pasta and we were all happy with it - simple but flavorful. All the ingredients seemed very fresh and well-prepared. I had pasta (penne) primavera and thought they did an excellent job with the veggies - crisp and not overcooked. The lady at the next table was tucking into a really nice looking salad.

They don't seem to be an americanized red-sauce and mozzarella type of Italian. Service was attentive and friendly. Bread was served warm - crusty exterior, soft interior. Mmmm.

The dinner menu doesn't seem to be that different than the lunch menu ($6-10) other than the obligatory dinner markup. For simple well-prepared pasta, I'd go for lunch and not pay the dinner time "cover charge." But I'm cheap like that.

We then walked over to Cafe Gelato. Much better than Ben&Jerry's in the same 'hood. The gelato had good texture, good flavor. I've had hazelnut, choc/hazelnut, raspberry/nutella, and espresso.
