Ogunquit/York report Sept. 2021

Joanie | Sep 13, 202104:54 AM     1

The coast of Maine is one of the few things that seems to get any attention on CH these days so I'll fill you in on some of the places we hit this year. Fri. we started at Ziggy's Donuts in Peabody MA, donuts the way they were meant to be, none of this $4 fruit loop crap. We then found our way up Rt. 1 to Shore Road in York for their $16.99 lobster roll served w/ chips or cole slaw. You could get warm or cold, we went warm this time which was fine but I'm more of a cold style gal. It's not a big roll but the bun was grilled nicely, the lobster was fresh and the slaw was ok (not as good as mine). Nice people, a bunch of picnic benches, off to a good start. After wandering around York Beach a bit we went to the Wiggly Barn Distillery which I hadn't been to in about 4 years. I thought we were splitting a cocktail but M said no let's get two. They were gigantic, one old fashioned and one sazerac (that one packed a punch) for $12 each. Nice people working, nice people sitting at the bar but it threw the timing off for doing the hike up Mt. A. So we drove and wandered around up top and checked out the views before getting into Ogunquit. After a quick swim and regrouping (at Bourne's Ocean Acres, a bargain) we walked down Marginal Way to Perkins Cove then to That Place in Ogunquit for our reservation. The bar was jammed and quite crowded overall. We had a nice table at the window watching the deck/street and the entire restaurant. Came back cuz that lobster crostini is so darn good, also had a Caesar salad, scallops wrapped in bacon and creme brulee. With a wine and a beer it was about $70. Good service and it was nice talking about Bulgaria with the hostess.

Sat. we walked into town to my fave Backyard Cafe and a delicious strawberry biscuit w/ iced coffee. Also stopped by Mornings in Paris who took the space of that other bakery on Main St. and had a decent choc. croissant. Back up toward Reny's, mini golf and lunch at Brown's Clam Shanty just over the line in Wells. Great crab salad roll and fried shrimp basket, about $32. Hung at Footbridge Beach then kept it a little more local that evening. Grabbed two seats at the cool outdoor bar at the Front Page. Blueberry cosmos aren't usually my thing but it was a nice drink, M enjoyed his draft and we shared a plate of very impressive mussels. Sometimes they're just these tiny little speck in the shell, not tonight. Nice bartenders from Serbia and Macedonia (not a country I'd met anyone from before) and there was a little bit of a floorshow with one of the customers which was amusing. Had a nice conversation w/ the guy next to us who confirmed that the owner/bartender at the Old Village Inn is indeed a dick. We then sat at the bar of Food for Thought but just weren't digging the scene there, everything served in plastic cups, drinks that a young kid would think were cool, we decided to walk up to the Beachfire which isn't so refined either and was really crowded, but that firepit is always enticing so we plunked down there to split a pulled pork sandwich with delicious chipotle potato salad, a wine and a drink. 2 min walk home. Perfect weather and a good time as usual in Ogunquit.
