Just came back from Sogo Tofu in San Jose and they've increased the number of offerings. Of course it is also a day from Chinese New Year's Eve.
Saw three versions of their vegetarian nian gao. One was reddish purple (likely red bean). One was a yellowy brown and the other an interesting green/green tea type (I know what you're thinking, and it is not mold ;-) ).
Another interesting item that I have not seen before is in the section where they normally put the hot and sour soups. In a similar soup plastic container in the refrig, is something that looks a lot like Mien Sien (think Oyster Noodle / Oh A Mee Swa, but without the oyster). Unfortunately I was in a hurry and did not have time to chat with the owners to ask about that or the ingredients in the nian gao.
Finally decided to buy their black soybean organic soymilk (same price as their regular organic soymilk, $1.99, but you get half the amount...) apparently made with black soybeans and brown rice. They also have a "rice milk" (instead of using soy, they use rice) but didn't care to try.
Lots of vegetarian versions of Taiwanese baked snacks/items, including red bean puff pastry (hung doh soo), plus a kind that has vegetarian curry inside. The Hakkanese vegetable bun is another interesting item for those who miss the real deal (Ngeh Bahn in Hakkanese) from parts of Taiwan (e.g. Shengkiang or Jioufen).
