Ode to a ‘Grinder’, or should it be ‘Hero’ , If the latter, make it MY hero

There are no vast areas of the country, where a Hero / Hoagie / Sub is called a Grinder, and wherever one carries this definition it is Springfield Massachusetts.
In particular worth mentioning a very well made, if not outstanding, one is
“Tony’s Pizza & Restaurant” at 106 Boston Road.
This section of Springfield is called Pine Point. Across the street from Tony’s is St. Michael’s Cemetery, and a half a block east on the same road is an old building now housing a Music Shop,
And this was the original Home of “Friendly’s Ice Cream” founded in 1935 here by the two brothers Blake.
But on with Tony’s and their Grinder, by the way this is it what they are called here on Tony’s Menu ‘Grinders’.
I had been to Tony’s before, as I have family living very close by. Last Wednesday I stopped by in the early afternoon to get a bite. Not being sure how Tony’s ‘Cold Cut Grinder’ would be, I asked the very friendly, no pun intended, waitress.
As the menu listed various ingredients, of which I liked all to be placed high on my ‘Cold Cut’, but not listed, asked for and found to be available was Mortadella.
So, here came my cold cut Italian Grinder, as said piled high with Ham, Salami, Capicole, Mortadella, Provolone, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Oil & Vinegar and sprinkled Oregano. The roll nicely toasted by request. A sheer delight. Highly recommended, and I let the waitress and kitchen know about it. Guess what, I was not able to finish this great ‘Meal’ and asked to wrap half of the Grinder to go. I devoured it the next day with the same original pleasure as at Tony’s.
The Restaurant is a very pleasant looking and inviting neighborhood family dining facility with an extensive menu. What makes it standing out is the white ‘cloth’ topped tables, subdued and distinct but not kitschy Italian décor. It is NOT just your local Pizza joint, rather its prices definitely reflect affordability for everyone.
