NYC Chef returning to hometown for one dinner me choose

My husband and I will be visiting my parents next weekend for a rare trip to DC, my hometown. We're very adventurous eaters, my parents slightly less so. We're looking for something moderately expensive (ie, no Citronelle) and not stuffy or too precious.

A couple of ideas/questions:

-Years ago we ate at Palena and I remember loving it. Is it still great?
-Husband and I had apps at West End Bistro soon after it opened and thought the food was great...the space, less so. Interested to hear how the food is these days. Also is Eric Ripert still attached?
-Just ran across Blue Duck Tavern and I'm intrigued. Can anyone share any recent experiences?

Any other ideas? Many thanks.
