last night my boyfriend wove an elaborate tale about in-n-out burger joints. i remember in and out fondly from my short time in california and always loved their burgers and can understand the loyalty they inspire. what my boyfriend told me, however, seems too strange to believe. he said that if one was in the *know*, one could order all kinds of varieties of burgers, such as bacon cheese burger, etc., that aren't listed on the menu. in order to do this, you had to know a special code. for instance, you walk into any in and out and ask for a 'southern cowboy' (he assured me he just made up that name) and receive something other than the standard 1-patty, 2-patty, etc. listed on the board. he said that this would work in any in and out anywhere in california. sounds fascinating. is he pulling my leg? he says he got his information from college friends who grew up in l.a. but has never actually participated in this ... uh ... phenomenon.
