a brief note about Wong's Cuisine

i have yet to find a decent chinese food place in the mid-wilshire/park labrea adjacent area. i happened to come across this hole in the wall on the south side of burton way (bev hills) a while back, and i have grown to really like the food. i thought i would share some information about this place.

the menus say 'city wok' but the menu's that they distribute to local homes/apts says - wong's cuisine. i suspect they probably had a cease and desist order from another restaurant of the same name(?) in either case, my gf says the place was formerly named ABC, and is a lone chinese restaurant amongst a strip of business (shoe store, laundromat, and a salon).

my fave dish is the "bear paw" - which is deep fried bean curd sauteed in a spicy black bean sauce with scallions. what i love about this dish, is that the bean curd is really crispy and the inside is still bean curd-ish (for lack of better description). fried tofu can often be chewy, but not this stuff. the heat quotient on the sauce was spot on as well.

i feel that the quality here separates this place from most chinese take-out joints in the area. a recent order of string beans came out perfect, and could place second against Mako's string beans.

the place is almost always empty, but apparently they do really well on the week for take-out and delivery. closed sundays. i don't know about NYC v LA chinese, but this stuff does it for me.
