Northern Chinese in Alameda - Ark

Martin Strell | Jan 2, 200510:04 PM

My wife Jing and I went to a restaurant in Alameda that was recommended by Chinese friends. The restaurant is called Ark (Fangzhou Miandian) at 1405 Park St. in Alameda, near Tucker's Ice Cream. We ordered the cumin lamb, which was recommended by our friends, as well as an order of xiao long bao and a vegetarian hot and sour soup, with homemade noodles. The lamb was delicious. The xiao long bao were small, juicy and tastey. The soup was a little too sour and not quite hot enough for me, but I liked the noodles. Our friends recommended the lapi ("beans sheets cucumber salad with pork), but we'll save that until next time. We enjoyed it and I'm sure we'll be back.

The chef, Jimmy Zhang, has been there for five months. Apparently Chef Zhang has won several awards for his cooking and food carving, which are diplayed prominently in the restaurant. He has an interesting web site on food carving, which also has the menu for the restaurant - link below.
