North Houston Eats

Hey, I'm new to the Board - just discovered it last week & wanted to get a thread going for the North side.

La Parmigiana - 12758 Grant Rd @ Malcomson - brand new. It's fancy with cloth linens but we were in jeans & other guests were in shorts. They have lunch specials for $5.99 Mon.-Sat. which is what we had. I had one of the best salads (house)I've ever had and my manicotti was great. They use a mild goat cheese in all or most of their foods & bake in a wood-burning stove. Son had pizza (choose 3 toppings) & a great chunky minestone soup. Hubby had spagetti & meatballs; sauce was good but the huge meatball was horrible -the only disappointment. We all loved their homemade flat bread - garlicky and served with heavily flavored olive oil. Their main menu is around $10 range. They have no liquor license. We'll go back for sure.

Clay's Restaurant - on Clay between Barker Cypress & Hwy 6 - A family restaurant that's good but not outstanding. They serve big hamburgers and similar foods. What was great about it was not the food but the country setting - big trees & livestock. They have horses, emus, goats & sheep that you can feed and pet, (before &/or after you eat)and a big sandlot. All the kids were having a blast while the adults could talk at their outdoor table, yet keep an eye on them while they ate.

Potatoe Patch - Everybody probably knows about this one but I just had my first trip. It's on 1960, just East of Hardy Toll. Intentionally misspelled, this is the place to go for home cooking! I never eat fried foods but this place has my mouth watering to go back. The sign looks like it's a crappy place, but it's a great find! They serve you all the "extras" you can eat. That weekday evening they were: fried okra, fried green tomatoes, hot homemade rolls, blueberry muffins & chocolate chip muffins. Then I had a chance to look at the menu. It said: "Extras are free with an entree". Oops, I was gonna order an appetizer. So, I ordered a chicken fried steak, & took it home since I was already full. Delicious!

Mo's Barbeque in Humble on 1960 close to Kenswick (Jesse Jones Park)-Whatever you do, don't go here! The meat & bread is way below average in taste & quality. Plus, they overcharged me on the meat(I should have checked my math before leaving) and they didn't give me potato salad in my take-out order which was ordered & paid for. Son couldn't even tell the ham from the turkey.

Los Cucos - probably everyone already knows about this too, but it our fave Mex. joint. In fact, all other Mexican food places only disappoint us. There are at least 2: one on Clay Rd, just west of Hwy. 6 and one on the east side of 249 between Spring Cypress & Louetta.

These are my recent experiences. Anyone else have any great recs or places to steer away from on the North side?
