ever since my friend's mom passed away i've been missing her nopalitos salad.
in my quest so far to find a good restaurant version, i've tried two:
the one at loteria grill and the one at monte alban.
the loteria grill version was far closer.
the dice on the vegetables was finer.
the balance of flavors between the nopalitos, the tomato, the cheese, the onion, the chile, and the vinaigrette was good.
the main difference between their salad and the one i am missing is that their nopalitos were softer than those my friend's mom put in her salad.
the nopalitos salad at monte alban basically had a "one note" flavor: that of vinegar. the vinegar flavor was so strong, it obscured all the other flavors. i visually saw the onion and the tomato, but could hardly taste them.
the dice was much chunkier than that of the loteria grill version and the nopalitos were even softer.
will report back as i continue to pursue this quest.
any suggestions of other places near the west side would be appreciated.
