I have been going to Nonya for lunch and have to say, it has exceeded my expectations.
The space is where former Boomerock used to be (northwest corner of Union and Raymond) and has been redesigned to be much more quiet. A small indoor fountain with bamboo makes for a calming effect as soon as you walk in. The sofa seating along 2 walls is very inviting.
Lunch is a great deal - Entrees for $7 and add a starter or a salad for $3 more. I have been there with lunch partners, so we have chosen the salad and entree combination.
Their "Crispy duck salad drizzled with honey dressing" is quite good - the duck could have been a little less crispy and retained some moistness, though. The "Chili beef salad with chili lime vinegar vinaigrette" has red onions and chiles and is my favorite. The final salad is "Spicy green papaya and lettuce with slivers of fried onion and lime" - I am yet to try it. The salads come in servings sufficiently large to fill you up if in the mood for a light lunch.
The "Wok fried sambal shrimp" was good, but the flavoring could have used further nuances. With generous amounts of shrimp, onions made the base of the sauce - perhaps a touch of brown sugar or tamarind might have added some complexity to the flavor. The best lunch entree I had was "Stir-fried beef with black peppercorn sauce". Also had their "Twice cooked pork sauteed in ginger garlic sauce". All entrees are served with steamed jasmine rice, or stir fried noodles - this is quite flavorful and had it not been for my low carb phase, my choice. This is a good place for low carb dieters.
They have 2 vegetarian items for lunch. Never had dessert, but they serve big bottles of flavored iced tea (mango was what we chose the last time) - enough to split between 2.
I would rate it on par with Saladang Song for food and ambience.
