nice AND QUIET but not too upscale near NYU

We are 2 professors moving from USC to NYU this coming Fall. We're in town for a conference this coming week and meeting two close friends for dinner on Friday and thought it might be appropriate -- and nicely celebratory -- to go to a place in what will become our new neighborhood.

Any suggestions for a nice dinner place that we can still have a chance to get into for this coming Friday?

I have started following the Manhattan board and know there was a recent thread about food near NYU but that was for cheap eats. We want something a bit more upscale (say, Babbo or Blue Hill level although I imagine we can't get into those, or perhaps a level below -- a nice local bistro), and since this is a dinner with dear friends, we need something where we can talk and be heard (i..e, no booming acoustics).

Any type cuisine would be nice.
So the criteria are:
1. near NYU
2. bookable for this coming Friday
3. not noisy
4. not a dive.
5. but not exhorbitant
6. something that will be nice enough that it could become one of our regular places during our new life at NYU.
