Nellie's service - a big disappointment

Calvin | Mar 26, 2006 10:05 AM

I took my mother to Nellies last night. I had really been looking forward to the trip, our first one to this restaurant. We arrived at about 5 PM and the place was less than 50% full. I ordered the chicken and my mother ordered the pork chops within 5 minutes of being seated.

After about 30 minutes of waiting, my mother asked the bartender (who happened to be passing by our table) about our order. The bartender said she would check on it. The table next to us did not have such a long wait. I had not seen our server for quite a while at this point. Our empty water glasses were eventually refilled by a bus boy.

It was not until nearly an hour after we were seated that our food arrived. The restaurant was maybe 60% full by this time. The food was good, but not great since some of the sides were not hot. When our (second) server asked I told her the food was good but I would not be returning because of the service. She made a half hearted attempt to take care of the bill, but did not really seem to mean it. Server #1 eventually walked by and said she was sorry for the slip-up. The folks at the table next to up tired to point out that Nellie's is a great place, and I acted as if what happened was not a big deal.

I realize now that I should have been more aggressive about the service before my mother had to ask for our order. But it still took an additional 30 minutes for our food to arrive. Once we finished, I paid (10% tip) and left at about 6:30. Its unlikely I will ever return. I am still disappointed about going to Nellie's because so many other hounds have had a positive experience there. This was the worst restaurant service I can recall, ever.
