Ever since moving to the South Shore (Oceanside to be precise) my shopping experience has been mediocre at best. I have a lot of family here so I'm fairly familiar with the area, but it's not much help. The problems:
1) The supermarkets stink. I mean, really stink. Waldbaum's, King Kullen, Stop & Shop--all terrible. About all I can say for them is that at least King Kullen stocks cake flour. I don't really need loads of prepared stuff, but the dairy/cheese and specialty grocery sections are seriously lacking. I can't even find a box of real basmati rice--just the American grown rip-off. I can buy that in bulk, of course; it's just an example.
2) Decent produce? Ha. See 1.
3) There no longer seems to be a good Jewish bakery in the area. Appetizing, yes. Bakery, no.
4) Meat. Rabinowitz and Sons is okay, but I've had better (I generally buy kosher meat).
I'm willing to make the occasional trek up to Plainview (Fairway, The Bakery, and Woodbury Kosher) but it's out of the way and it requires getting up early on Sunday before Fairway turns into a zoo. Does anyone have any good, more local suggestions for shopping?
