Mum's Busy - Shabu Sen Detour Report

vliang | Nov 11, 200403:19 PM     3

Had a hankering for shabu shabu due to the cold rainy weather of late. BF obliged with a search on the board for shabu shabu in SF and came up with Mum's. Got there, completely full and really noisy/deafening loud. Despite the lure of all-you-can-eat and drink, we left searching for another spot.
Went instead to Shabu Sen. Was moderately occupied when we went in. Looked clean and was far less deafening. Sat at the bar. Ordered a regular shabu shabu and decided to try their sukiyaki as well. The shabu shabu broth was rather flavourless. Had to add a ton of soy even at the end after cooking all the meat and such. Usually my fav part is having the noodles with veggies and the broth at the end. But this time, the blandness was uninspiring. The sukiyaki was pretty good. BF definitely preferred the sukiyaki although I told him that shabu shabu can be much tastier. Ordered another side order of beef for the sukiyaki. Had a pitcher of Kirin beer between us. Was able to have the meal in a leisurely pace. And the service was good... the waitress was very diligent in keeping up with the skimming of the fat/spooge off of the shabu shabu pot.
Total came to $50 for both of us for everything. was cheaper than Mum's all-you-can eat and we really were stuffed. But wonder about if there's somewhere with better shabu?
