MSP - Latinpig goes to Alma

Don't worry I am not going to use the third person. I will leave it to Jfood who really writes some great restaurant reviews. Thanks you!

Having had a near perfect meal at Heidi's the week before, we went to Alma on Saturday night with high hopes.

The evening started out on a bit of a low note. We were given a four top table in the front part of the restaurant that was not the greatest location. It was in the middle of the walk way and you felt like you were on display a little. I prefer being upstairs where it is a little more intimate. Because of some large groups they had that night, we were stuck with the location given. That was the one and only disappointment of the evening.

They had just changed the menu the night before so some of the due dilligence I had done in advance was not useful. As luck would have it, Alex was in the kitchen the entire evening.

I started with the Pasture Raised Bison Tartar shallot, capers, mustard, "egg yolk mayo" > This was really delightful and had wonderful flavor. It was not at all gamey. It went very well with the 2003 Meyney we had brought to drink.

Next up was the Glazed Black Cod marinated spinach, sweet pickled cucumber, chives. The other three at the table got the lemon orzo pasta but I was the lucky one. This was the best Black cod I have ever had in my life. At the end of the evening I talked to Alex and told him how great it was.

Finally, I wanted the pork but out of respect for the poeple I was with, I ordered the Duck. Glazed Confit & Roasted Duck Breast homemade hoisin, scallion pancake, pickled turnip & cucumber. Another signature dish, I had much better luck with this than Jfood (perhaps the Alex effect). It was just outstanding.

For dessert, we had Chocolate Pudding Cake hot fudge, chocolate stout ice cream

Nectarine & Ginger Cake roasted nectarine puree, ginger buttermilk sorbet 8.

Lemon Verbena Creme Brulee butter cookie, cherry apricot jam

The Chocolate pudding cake was great. The Creme Brulee was really special. So light and delicate. One of the best I have ever had. The nectarine and ginger cake was so so.
