Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food report

JugglerDave | Jan 17, 2004 04:51 PM

The Bride and I decided to try Ms. Tootsie's for lunch after a vigorous walk thru the Italian Market.
They didn't have a lunch-specific menu so prices were normal dinner prices. The place is "upscale soul food" in a nice room with maybe 40-50 seats.

After devouring the provided biscuit (tasty, though annoyingly served with a single container of "spread" rather than real butter) I had the Fried Chicken, with sides of collard greens ad macaroni & cheese. (Entrees get choice of 2 sides). The fried chicken was great, one huge combined breast/wing with very good breading and cooked just right. The mac & cheese was excellent if you like CHEESE. Which I do. Including the nice "crunchy/burned" stuff on top that you get with proper baked mac & cheese. The collard greens were maybe a bit sweet but very nice. Cornbread was also provided.

The Bride had Fried Whiting with carmelized candied yams and okra/corn. The plate came out with TWO nice whiting fillets and the sides. She pronounced it all excellent.

This being lunch we were stuffed and couldn't try any of the desserts. However, I love desserts and will go back to try them, and probably will need several trips to try the 6 different desserts.

The only strange thing was the ice tea which came in a takeaway sports-bottle. I'd expect that at Friendly's or something.

In general, entrees (with 2 sides) are $12-17, desserts only $3, and extra sides $3 or $4. location is 1314 South.
