Move over Guelaguetza...Antequera de Oaxaca

I know, it's heresy - I'm a big Guelaguetza fan (of the mid-city branches), but since they've expanded, their food has declined some. It's still good, and there will always be a place for it, but the food seems less fresh, less interesting, probably because it's made on a larger scale. But there is a great new place to go for mole: Antequera de Oaxaca is on Melrose at Wilton. It's a small place with a limited menu, but the food is outstanding. The moles are more intricate and interesting than the big G. Red mole was phenomenal, spicy and complex. Black mole had a great smokey taste. The cecina was superb, tender, perfectly spiced. Memelas (like sopes with porky-black beans and avocado) were crisp and delicious, cooked just right. They also have clayudas which we didn't try and delicious sounding chiles rellenos, which they were not serving. If you are a Guelaguetza fan, I urge you to give this place a try.
