Motze closes after tonight's service, ending a 6-month run as a Japanese-influenced pop-up and will become Duna next month. https://www.duna.kitchen Here's a quick report on the late night dinner I had here in December.
I ordered ala carte. The rainbow trout, $16, was one of the most boring things I've been served. Sorely lacking in acidity or salt to perk up the mushy fish served with wasabi. I must have looked dismayed, as my server soon popped by with a complimentary dish of housemade pickles, $6, that kept me from complaining. Lack acid is not something I thought I'd ever say about something made by Chef Balla.
As much as I disliked the starter, I was totally in love with the chicken nare rice porridge, $19. A loose style of congee infused with umami-rich chicken dashi, the colorful toppings included grilled chicken thigh meat, crushed peanuts, feathery wisps of cabbage, cilantro, crunchy fried garlic, soft poached egg, housemade chile sauce and probably more that I'm forgetting.
That's the Motze dish I'll always remember.
