My recent 40 hour trip to the Big Easy (probably my 20th) was inspired by the amazing Ponderosa Stomp and I knew dining time ,between to over 22 hours of music, was limited AS were the hours of dining. I've watched the pendulum swing and back and forth over Mother's on these boards, and FOR ME the bottom line is, YES, it's a tourist trap..except YES, sometimes I LIKE to be a tourist and few places get me acclimated to Nola better than this overpriced but fun institution; at least it's non-pretentious!!
One wouldn't avoid Pat O'Brien's or Preservation Hall because you might find better coctails or jazz elsewhere, would one?? Hence, if you're going to be new to Nola, STOP here for lunch , have a ferdi or Po' Boy..wash yourself in the "all (thriving) business" atmosphere, gaze at the photos on the wall, have fun,and plan your journeys to Mandich,Uglesich (where ,this time I found the feigned chuminess of the "hip" clientele a bit much, though the chow was indeed a smash),Bayonna,Upperline, the Verde Mart,
the unassuming Olivier's,Commander's Palace..wherever.
Just don't feel you have to AVOID this place to rate!
Oh yeah, Rock N Bowl, PLEASE pay a little more attention to Clean Up..far too many bottles around if a riot broke out! And the (necessary) take out sadwiches from VooDoo BBQ proved the perfect accompaniment to Barbara Lynn,Roy Head,Archie Bell and all those tasty Stomp morsels.
