Moshulu, thanks for recommending Cafaggi. Had a solid meal there (quality ingredients, well prepared, very generous servings) - 16.50 Euro for a two course meal, no cover charge. Enjoyed the artichoke risotto (for the primi) and the grilled pork chops with a small salad on the same plate (for the secondi). Run by a very friendly family (3 generations) and filled with locals.
Wandered around the area and enjoyed dessert (gelato) at Carabe - knew it was a good choice when I saw that it was made on the premises.
Remembered your advice and tried the wild boar (cingale) in Florence - it was indeed sweet with no gamey flavor.
Never mind the 4 C weather in January, this must be one of the best times of year to be in Florence - hardly any tourists.
PS - Will be in Paris in late May, would love to meet you and other Paris Chowhounds if you are agreeable.
