Mon Ami Gabi - B-day dinner

Last night, I took my girlfriend to Mon Ami Gabi - Oak Brook to celebrate her birthday. Though, I would have rather taken her somewhere downtown...circumstances left our choices restricted to somewhere around Oak Brook. This year, we wanted to stay away from the stuffy fine dining fix course experience, and we wanted something more laid back and fun.

Thank you all, especially ddickson and vi for leading us that way. Celebrating special occasions is something that I value greatly, and now I have another resource I can turn to for research and advice. Thanks again guys.

Our reservations were at 9:00 pm. And the extremely nice host sat us a cozy corner table, while wishing my girlfriend a happy birthday. I had informed them in advance of the special occasion, and they had accommodated us accordingly. Our service was adequate, but not on point. The food runner seemed rush while plopping down our food, while the server missed the "required" checking in after each course to see if our food was okay. Lucky for him, the food was great. Since we are extremely laid back people, we didn't care about the service and it didn't take away from the experience in any way. As long as the food is good and the company better, right?

Now to the food:

We started with the Oysters du Jour, which is basically raw oysters on a half shell. I agree with ddickson...they do it perfect here. We moved the cocktail sauce aside and just dunk the things in the vinegar sauce.

We both had the Prime New York Steak, with shallot confit, bourgogne sauce... medium rare. The frites came out perfect. It was hot. The texture was a little crisp on the outside, exactly the way it should be. The steaks were delicious. While some sauces used at certain restaurants (ie Nine) overpowered the steak, the bourgogne sauce here perfectly complemented the tender, high quality steak.

After our entrees, the server brought out a little chocolate ice cream pastry puff with a candle on top to surprise my girlfriend. Nice touch.

We ended our meal with Pear and Chocolate Crepes. It was huge, and you really can't go wrong. So what if the pears were canned? It was delicious, capping our meal off perfectly.

Bottom line: From what I gathered from this board, I didn't expect refined service. But, it was pleasant enough where it didn't take anything away from the evening. The little touches helped and we appreciated it. Along with the very good food, we had a great time and experience.
