Lately I have been on a vigilent search for a really good cheeseburger in Manhattan. Up to this point, I had tried several different venues, from Fanelli's (quite good, though unexceptional fries), to Corner Bistro (not bad, but boring bun and surly service) to Old Town Bar & Grill (good burger, but lousy fries and the burger was a bit on the smalish side for my tastes). All in all, not bad, but every time I end up leaving the meal somewhat unsatisfied - not quite up to "the best".
However, from the recommendations from here and Mr. Leff, I decided to give a shot for the first time at Molly's at 23rd and 3rd Ave. What a treat! The ambiance inside was wonderful (though I think they kinda overdo it a tad on the sawdust), service was, much to my surprise for such a light order (just the burger, no apps/drinks) very good, and the cheeseburger was simply incredible. Very juicy, nice and hot, and the bun had a less plain Jane feel than mine the past few times at Corner Bistro. Plenty big as well. Even the fries didn't disappoint - not little dinky shoestring fries, they were thicker and with potato skins still attached to parts of the fries gave them a real "homemade" feel. I highly recommend for chowhounders out there looking for a great cheeseburger.
