Today I ate Amsterdam for lunch and Mocha for dinner. To be fair, Mocha just opened and they are probably still working out the kinks. Plus, it wasn't a fair test since the Amsterdam was delivered where I was working and was therefore warm, not hot from the grill.
It was a wonderful lunch. I ordered the guacamole-topped plain burger, and it was perfect. The meat flavorful, tender, juicy, pink on the inside.
For dinner I ordered a classic Mocha burger. I really liked the spicy-hot house sauce the burger came with. Also ordered the lamb belly bacon. They need to work on the bacon, it should have been crisp - but it wasn't. What's the point of soft, undercooked bacon? The burger, on the other hand, was overcooked; the charring on the outside was nice, but it was overcooked in the center with the inevitable loss of flavor.
The vibe at Mocha is not dissimilar to Amsterdam, young, crowded. Mocha will have a liquor license, and has a somewhat wider menu. I'll be back. They may learn how to cook the bacon more and the burger less.
It's great to have a place open until midnight in the Village. Plus, it's great to have a restaurant so near NYU.
