We moved to Bristol Borough only 2.5 years ago and were pleasantly surprised to find that it is a real hotbed of great restaurants. Kind of like an early stage New Hope. It's a very exciting time to be here.
We go to Cafe Bombay regularly. The food is EXCELLENT, superb, and without peer. I've been just about everywhere in NYC, San Francisco, and Edison, NJ. The preparations at Cafe Bombay are easily better than most, without question. Their ingredients are very fresh - the flavors are positively wonderful, and their chef is definitely accomplished. The use of ingredients and spices are well-balanced. The Chicken Saag is the BEST that we have EVER had.
Trust me - this is some of the very best Indian food available, not just here but ANYWHERE in the entire Philly / NYC metro area. Dishes may be ordered with spice from 1-10. 8-10 is no joke. If you want your food to be hot AND flavorful, you will get it! Most of the time, we choose 7 or 8 for most dishes, but do prefer the vegetarian one's as even more spicy, 9 or 10. Even if you are a bit afraid of spice, we'd recommend that you at least try one at 6 or 7. In our opinion, the best flavors really come out when there's some HEAT.
The service is very polite and reserved - it's a family restaurant. The decor got a bit of an update recently and it's a welcome touch. We have had pretty much the entire menu, and it's all good and worth your consideration. Our favorites, and in no particular order, include the following:
Chef's Special Indian Salad. It's chickpea-based, spicy and absolutely delicious. One portion can be easily shared by 2 or more people. We order one nearly every time we go - it's that good.
Rogan Josh. Pieces of lamb marinated in yogurt with herbs. Spiced then cooked in its own gravy. A north Indian favorite We ordered this as a 7 (out of 10) in range of spice / heat. Next time we'll do 8 as we like our food spicy. This was excellent.
Fish Malabar. All time favorite medium spiced fish curry from the coast of Kerala. This dish is just awesome. Trust me.
Chicken Makhani. A flavorful rich creamy tomato-based sauce flavored with a mixture of magic and fenugreek leaves. One of our absolute favorite dishes. It's beyond description.
Lamb or Chicken Kadai. Kadai cooking is native to Sind which was formerly a part of Bombay. Pieces of meats or vegetable are quickly cooked in a Kadai (wok) with a small amount of spiced oil, onion, tomatoes, garlic, and other subtle flavors
Chicken or Lamb Curry (Strong Flavor). Cooked in the traditional curry sauce (onion tomato). We usually order this as a 7 or 8. It's WONDERFUL. Next time we'll do 8 but really this is a great dish.
Chicken Saag (Light Flavor). Chicken cooked with fresh spinach, onion, tomato, ginger, garlic and spices. We order this at 7, so as to not overwhelm the delicate flavors with too much heat. This is THE BEST Chicken Saag EVER. No exaggeration.
VEGETARIAN DISHES. We tend to prefer these dishes SPICY, anywhere from 7-10.
Vegetable TIkka Masala. Fresh Vegetable cooked in mild flavorful tomato sauce. Yum!
Dal Thaduka. Whole black lentils and yellow lentils cooked in ginger garlic and tomato. Garnished with cilantro leaves. We like this best at 9 or 10.
Gigi makes his own desserts from scratch, including his own ice cream - and they are INCREDIBLE.
The breads are all excellent, of course, as well as the mango and mixed berry lassis.
