Misc. FWIW in the ASS

Oops! That should be the AAS, our local excuse for a newspaper. Hopefully they are and will remain cognizant of the vast foodieconspiracy here in Waterloo and give it proper recognition in their ever dwindling quality of a newspaper. After all, the best BBQ in the USA is right here in River City, although a wag of a friend of mine refers to Franklin's as ''barbequeue' alluding to the long wait.

Now that that is out of the way:

A. Broyles is starting a monthly food advice column. Too bad it can't be weekly. Also have heard that she may take over the food critic job

Bahn Mi: I keep reading about Banh Mi on this board. There is an article today about Austin Bahn Mi places

Elaine's Table in Hunt,TX: Don't believe it. It is a cozy, interesting looking place in a rustic setting. It is what you would hope to find as a discovery driving along the Guadelupe River. I have eaten there 3-4 times and it needs lots of work. The owners are very nice, sincere well meaning people but their food does not make the cut. I got confirmation of that from a fellow hound. She does, however, make super desserts. (Disclaimer: it has been several years since I have been there and the pecan crusted trout was good. Thass' all, just good)

One of the Marie Callendar's (is it Callendar or Callender, I can never remember. Not like the calendar which is spelled with an "a" as in "date", thanks to my dearest English teacher aunt) has closed. What on earth are the people on Friday Night Lights going to do. It seems that was the only food they knew about. Oh wait, FNL is closed to. Maybe that is why MC closed because all the FNL people left town.

As an aside I would like to mention BJ's ( what a name for a place) at the Arbor Walk. It is a franchise place that I will probably never eat at, but I would like to mention that it is good place to drop in for a beer. They have a fair selection on tap, the place is a "clean well-lighted place"(apologies to Papa) and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The place does seem to have caught on because the few times I have been there there have been (apologies likewise to Gertrude) a sizeable crowd of diners. If you are going to Home Depot, Specs, etc. it provides a welcome respite.

(All of the above written with only one glass of wine consumed. I am definitely getting better,
