Last minute challenge/the downside to spontaneity

maggsdalena | Apr 17, 201512:40 PM

I'm posting for the first time, but not without having done my research. I'm still stuck though and just a visitor to Manhattan, so I'd love help for a last minute request!

We decided to take a spontaneous trip to the city tomorrow, bringing my six-year old son for his first visit. Coming to New York is a special treat, one which we've always enjoyed as two adults without the kid.

We are going to a show on 42nd street tomorrow night that should end before 6:30. Our hotel is on W57th just below the park. To the extent possible, I would like to capitalize on being in New York to have a special meal that we can't get in our smaller home town. I think a 7:00 reservation would be ideal.

We don't need "kid-friendly" necessarily in the vein of special menus or gimmicks, but want to avoid kid-averse. I guess no fine dining this time, as I think a quiet white table cloth would cause more stress in this scenario, not relaxation. We can "make do" with non-kid-menu type places if they would be willing to do easy off-menu things or if bread, plain pasta, etc. is available for our unfortunately selective kid.

I get this would be a different question if we had planned out a few weeks, but we didn't... and I think we should definitely make a reservation somewhere so we're not stuck hungry and tired with me feeling robbed of a great NYC meal.

So, any suggestions looking on Open Table or with other knowledge, of where we can score a reservation or know there would be little/no wait for tomorrow night?
- Somewhere near or in between theater and hotel or a place that can be reached quickly by cab
- Good cocktails, beer, wine
- No real budget concerns
- Fun, upbeat atmosphere
- Excellent food... ethnic, seafood, whatever

I looked at Toloache and loved the menu, but no dice with a reservation. I thought about going downtown to something like Otto, but my husband's encouraging me to remember that six year olds crash eventually, so we should probably stick closer to our eventual resting place. We have a back-up reservation at Landmarc (I will cancel promptly if there are alternate suggestions), but it doesn't excite me. Our hotel restaurant (a little fancier than I'd like) could also be a back-up option.

Can you think of something that wouldn't be just "making do," but could be fun and delicious for tomorrow night within these parameters? What would you do?

All suggestions greatly appreciated... especially enthusiastic endorsements. I'd love to try something new!
