Had breakfast/lunch today at the Albuquerque Tortilla Factory in Sunnyslope (would this be north central phoenix)? I'm a big fan of New Mexico style food, especially red and green chile sauces, so this place has been on the "to do" list for a while.
Unlike the "other" tortilla factory in town (no relation), ATF is pretty simple, stark (yet clean) little operation on a somewhat industrial road - easy to miss if passing buy, Inside is a counter to place orders and a half dozen tables, plus shelves of corn & flour tortillas, masa, gordita bread, pork rinds and other assorted staples. There's also a freezer with a mix of ready to zap burritos, bulk tamales, and nicely priced packages of green and red chiles.
At the counter you order from a decent sized menue of standard Mex fare, from combo plates to a la carte items... all very reasonably priced. You order, grab a seat and enjoy when ready. One friend had huevos rancheros, smothered in greeen chile. I had enchiladas, one gree/one red, both very good. Not as hot (tear inducing) as I've had in ABQ, but certainly packing enough kick to make them more interesting than most ench's in town. Another friend and I also ordered tacos, which I thought were fantastic. They were a cross between Mexico style and gringo, with a single, mid sized floppy tortilla (not greasy) and overflowing with meat/cheese and some lettuce. If this place was closer to me, I'd go there one a week just for a taco fix.
It was a Saturday morning and fairly quiet, though a steady stream of regulars came in and bought staples or ordered food to go. As mentioned, it's not fancy - coke from a can/plastic fork type of place. But good grub and nicely priced. I also bought two half pints of frozen chile to go. This is a mini review as we only tried a few things and it's worth going back to try more.
