Milwaukee east side Asian?

Mike Newman | May 20, 200510:30 AM

I'm interested to know what Milwaukee eaters think of casual Thai and Chinese places on the east side or in Shorewood. I've had lots of bad food from many of them. Lowlights include William Ho's buffet, East Garden's beef & broccoli in garlic sauce, and Thai Kitchen's beef salad. I am constantly astounded by the "Best of Milwaukee" signs in the East Garden foyer. Was that place really good ten years ago?

I've also had some ok dishes from Hop Sheng (a tasty moo shoo and a hot hot & sour soup) and Thai Kitchen (red curry is their best dish, and the pad siew is also good). You should know that ordering "mild" from TK delivers food that's spicier than you're probably expecting. (Hop Sheng has the chef formerly of Peony in Tosa. Peony used to be good but isn't any more--the dim sum offerings languish in the freezer for long periods before you order them.)

I know that for better Asian eats I must venture farther afield, but for weeknight take-out that's not going to happen. And I'm trying hard to avoid the chain places like Chin's and Noodles & Co. What can you folks suggest?
