Milk Street TV with Christopher Kimball

For the last couple of weeks Chris Kimball's new Milk Street TV show has aired on PBS. Interestingly, WGBH is running it immediately after ATK and Cook's Country. I stumbled onto it quite by accident last week when CC finished and they immediately ran a promo for Milk Street.

It is quite well-shot with spot focusing on the cooking location and out-of-focus backgrounds. It is different from ATK/CC largely so far in that both episodes have had a short piece with him visiting a chef/author and discussing a recipe the Milk Street chefs will later prepare on the show. So far, no equipment tests or taste tests or (thankfully) any equivalent of the Lisa McManus segments. There is a small studio audience.

Thus far, the on-air cooks interacting with Chris are Catherine Smart, Matthew Card, and Erica Bruce. You may remember the latter from a season of ATK a few years back. So far, all seem fine and I found them likable. The recipes are not the traditional ones ATK/CC has done but are not particularly complex or exotic so far, and I would have been interested in tasting all of what they prepared.

I know Kimball is a polarizing figure for some but I always enjoyed what he brought to the shows. ATK has suffered from his departure as their most recent season changed from must-watch to a show which I no longer cared for, as the hosting team of Julia and Bridget seems forced and are just out of their element in that role. I suspect that Dan Souza, who was just recently promoted into the role Kimball used to hold at ATK, will take over the host role in the next season of ATK produced sometime next year and let Julia and Bridget return to their regular featured cook roles.
