June 30 (or Day 4 of re-opening), a friend and I met here for a lunch. We'd thought we could avoid the lunch rush by arriving at 1:30pm, but no such luck. The line snaked to the entrance.
I have to confess that neither of us had eaten at Cafe Intermezzo before. Clearly we were in the minority judging from the buzz around us as waiting customers shared happy memories of the spot. The man ahead of me said he had been here on the first day and was back already because he had missed it so much.
Once it's your turn, the staff give you full attention assembling your order to spec. My friend highly recommends the chicken salad on honey wheat bread, $9.50, with a ginger mint ice tea chaser.
For me, the combination of half BLTA and tossed green salad, $9.95, and a blueberry drink. Watching my salad being assembled, I was amazed at the volume that was tamped down and compressed into a bowl. I found the signature poppy seed dressing a little too sweet for my tastes. Sprouts were less than fresh, but I did love the crunchy croutons.
Seeing the dark brown, crunchy bacon slices on the counter, I was encouraged to order the BLTA. However, as can be seen here, mine was made with a different anemic batch of fatty bacon. No matter, the salad itself was plenty to eat on site, and the sandwich went home with me where I could fix the problem.
We found seats at a shared table against the windows facing Haste Street. These tables are crammed much too tightly together. Even slim salad-eaters cannot get in and out of the chairs without the cooperation of those at the next table. So try to find a free-standing one like this.
