I've noticed a sign for a new restaurant coming soon in the old Buckaroos space on High St. on the Waltham-West Newton line. It's called Paisano's. There's a hand-written sign saying it's going to be Mexican/ Guatemalan home-style food.
Paisano's Mexican Restaurant
223 High St.
I tried the new Hungry Coyote restaurant on the corner of Moody and High St. yesterday in the former SoCal space (originally Hanlon's Shoes for decades). Yummy chicken chimichanga (huge and only $3.95) and pastor quesadilla plate ($8.95). The pastor was really flavorful and tender. The beans are on the soupy side but I liked them anyway and the rice had peas and a bit of carrot in it. All in all, a nice plate. I wanted the chiles rellenos but they were out of chiles. I'll go back for those and the tamales next time.
The restaurant doesn't have a lot of sit-down space, maybe for 20 people, but it's clean, bright and comfortable. I've seen people standing up and eating around the perimeter of the space when I drive by. The owner is very charming and outgoing, which doesn't hurt. The staff seemed a bit shy but opened up once I used some Spanish to order. They'll get more comfortable speaking to the public as time goes on, I'm sure.
