Felt strongly about this topic from below so I posted it up top where it might actually get read.
An interesting topic that always results in a heated debate. Been lucky enough to have lived in several different parts of the country after being born and raised in Memphis. Have gone out of my way to sample lots of Q - have found what I consider to be good in places you would not expect (Minn) and bad in places (KC) that would shock you.
I've never heard of Memphis being touted as a Rib Capital, but regardless I don't feel that any town should be touting itself as the Capital of (fill in the blank cuisine). What makes Memphis so unique is the fact that BBQ joints are literally all over the place - like McDonald's in other cities - most very good some not so great.
Learn your lesson and don't listen to the jackasses on the Food Network (I'm classically trained French chef and I cringe at 3/4 of the techniques/opinions I've seen on there) - form your own opinion - that's what real chowhounds do, right? and lay off the city insults -Memphis is a great to town to live in and I have lived in LA, NY, Chicago, etc. Let me know where you live, chances are I have been there and I'll gladly tell you why it sucks.
