In Memory: Yung Sing Pastry Shop

syoung | Dec 2, 201910:09 AM     47

On about Nov 29, 2009, Yung Sing put up a note on the window saying they were closed for renovations, but alas they never did reopen. Today the remnants of the store is still there, shuttered up with brown paper and the Yung Sing sign still ever present as the store location was never rented out.

Yung Sing on Baldwin was the first true Chinese bakery in Toronto. As the story goes, the Chinese couple, Chu and Ngan Ko, started the pastry shop in 1968. I remember in the 1970's when I lived in North Toronto and would go down there just for the buns and it was my regular for lunch during my university days. They were inexpensive and tasty and there would always be lineups every time during lunch time.

There were a lot of rumours about what happened but I think the one that stuck was the Ko's were getting old and wanted to pass on the store to their children but none of them were interested. There was then some kind of sibling dispute and that's why the pastry shop still sits there untouched for 10 years (the Ko's also owned the property).

I'm posting this in memory because to me Yung Sing is a Toronto institution, the first of its kind, and this is the 10th Anniversary of its demise. I'm posting this also to ask if anyone has any information about what actually happened? I heard Chu and Ngan may have already passed. It's so sad how it ended.
