Meals to impress, but not frighten older Midwestern parents

My parents are coming to NYC next month to celebrate my Mother's 70th birthday, and I'd like to treat them to some special meals. Problem #1 I'm not rich. #2 They're likely to be put off by stuffy or "scene" type restaurants.

But I do know that they do LOVE seafood and German food and have never been to New York City. I'd like to take them for a New England seafood feast-type meal, a good German meal, and/or a restaurant with a real Old New York feel or view that won't make them feel uncomfortable. I'd be especially interested in places that take reservations so they aren't left waiting for long periods of time.

Any and all suggestions appreciated!
