Our large group gathered in the back room at Maxwell's Eatery for some social time. I had a chance to try the light and refreshing Kolsch from Secret Trail, a new brewer in Chico.

One of the locals ordered his favorite pizza, Buffalo Bacon Bleu, that has diced chicken, crisp bacon, fresh tomato, bleu cheese crumbles, and creamy Buffalo sauce. Essentially Buffalo wing flavors on a pizza (minus the celery). While the crust was much thicker than I'd like, the crust was had good yeasty flavor, enough salt and light, not wet and doughy. I liked the second pie better, a straight-up Pepperoni pizza, that had a ton of the spicy sausage topping.

In the deep-fried drinking food category, the Fried Pickles made with thick spears had an interesting twist of spicy cayenne in the batter. Deep-fried Cheese Curds also had fans at the table. Both were served with a variety of dipping sauces.

Our waitress managed to keep up as our group size grew and prepared separate checks, smiling the whole time. The service and hospitality during a difficult time were most impressive.
