After reading several posts about PRL Bar and Mauro's Pizza on this board, my husband and I decided to head down to Hollywood today and give them a try. We worked up a thirst (though who really needs a reason to enjoy Belgian beer?!?) at a nearby Aqua Golf driving range, then found ourselves right in front of Mauro's around 3. Little did we know that there are 2 Mauro's!
We discovered that:
*PRL was closed -- oh well, will have to try it next time
*The Mauro's next to PRL sells pizza by the slice or pie, while the Mauro's a few doors west (where we visited) sells personal pizza and pasta dishes. Same owners, basically same pizza style. The owners are Honduran, btw.
*The pizza was FANTASTIC. Perfectly thin, crispy, chewy crust and excellent sauce. (Renzo's here in Boca has pizza w/ great crust, but the sauce is a little lacking.) I had the eggplant and my husband had the cheese w/ tomato slices, and when brought to our table we wished we had just ordered one personal-sized pie b/c they were big. However, after taking a bite, there was no doubt that we'd each eat (almost) a whole one. They were fanastic! Customers at the next table ordered Zeppoli's and they looked delicious too.
*I had a Russian beer they sell by the bottle (had a taste for more than Michelob) which turned out to be a huge bottle of 8% alcohol beer. It wasn't the best beer (not bad, but would rather have Russian vodka than beer) but boy did it give me a buzz.
We finished off our feast by crossing the street to Chocolada, an old favorite. The chocolate mousse cake didn't look quite as yummy as we remembered it (no chocolate shavings on the outside) and the place got a face lift -- looked more polished and less homey. But the tiramesu was still very good and a nice way to finish the day.
Thanks for the great recommendation!
