Maui Trip Report - 8/8-814

Thanks to all who post their restaurant experiences. It helped us choose places quite a bit. Here are some of our (me, DH, DS1, DS2 (12 yo twins), sis, BIL).

Da Kitchen - Kahului - We went here for lunch after our planed landed from SFO. The katsu chicken was very good. DS2 began his quest for the best beef teriyaki, he liked the plate here. DH and DS1 shared a chili loco moco that included many different kinds of meat (bacon, Portuguese sausage, spam,....). They said that the chili kind of overpowered everything.

Shave ice at Ululani's, Annie's Shave Shack, Local Boy - all in Lahaina. The syrups at Ululani's were by far the best of the lot, just more fruity and tangy. I liked the texture of the ice at Annie's the best but my family preferred Ululani's. The Local Boy ice was ok, but they didn't pack it very well so we didn't get much. We had a shave ice just about everyday, it was wonderful.

Maui Taco - Napili - we lunched here twice. The grilled fish taco was delish. Everything else was just ok. The 2nd time we went, they got the order wrong (DS ordered a quessadilla, not nachos) but we didn't wait for them to correct it. Would return for the fish taco, but not much else.

Honokawai Okazuya - Had a dinner and a lunch here. For dinner we ordered the fish with lemon caper sauce - really good. DS2 had his requisite teriyaki beef and proclaimed it the best. People here are very nice. Would come back again, but perhaps not twice on the same trip.

China Boat - great eggplant, don't order the crispy duck.

Pizza Paradiso - ordered 2 pizzas (combos, don't remember which). This was very good thin crust pizza, but also very pricey.

Aloha Mixed Plate - met some local friends here for dinner. Kalbi ribs and coconut shrimp were excellent (kalbi ribs were best of the trip). I had the chili lime chicken - it was ok, but preferred the kalbi ribs. Everyone was happy with their dinnners. DH loved the mail tai.

Honolua Store - shared a char siu chicken plate lunch with sis and BIL. Really excellent value for the price. DH had a chicken wrap and DSs had grilled cheese - all good. The chocolate cake was also wonderful.

Bought a few pineapples (Longs, Star Market), Maui beef (Longs), local greens (farmers market), and breakfast staples (Star Market). Also bought the banana bread from Julia's stand - very good. My sis loved the coconut candy as well.

Thanks again to all you hounders for your advice!
