More on Matzoh Ball Technique

I have conducted a proper experiment. I made another round of matzoh balls, this time not wetting my hands. Despite the fact that all the balls came from the same batter and cooked the same amount of time, there were still variations: some balls were nicely cooked through and fluffy, some a bit dense in the middle. Can anyone explain this?
