Matsuri -- The Very Good (Food) and Very Bad (Service)

JGS | Feb 28, 2004 03:50 PM

Went to Matsuri last night -- my third visit. The food was outstanding. Sashimi sampler very fresh and "buttery," the Kobe beef was delectable as always, and a grilled squid special, stuffed with rice and flavored with some sort of ginger sauce, was nothing short of amazing.

Yet, for the second time, the service was almost laughably bad. I was with a party of four, and they encouraged us to order family style, with some small plates, followed by sushi or sashimi, followed by a couple of large plates. That is exactly what we did. The small plates came quickly, the sashimi took a bit too long, and we'd still be waiting for the large plates but for the fact that we finally canceled the order, 45 minutes after we finished everything else. Canceling the order was itself an ordeal, since it took 10 minutes to find our waitress, who appeared to be trying (effectively) to ignore us.

Even paying the bill was difficult -- after giving the waitress our credit cards, it took 15 minutes for her to return with the printouts. All in all, 2 hours at the restaurant for a few appetizers and some sashimi.

As I said, this is the second time this has happened to me there, and at this point I don't know if I'd go back. Yes, the food is great, and reasonably priced, and the room is buzzing and stylish, but the experience is too frustrating. Or maybe it's just a place to avoid on Friday or Saturday night.
