This is true royalty ... the queen of princess cakes. Seriously worth the drive to Martinez for princess cake fans living in the East Bay.
The marzipan is the most flavorful I've ever had ... ever. Each bite of cakes was just ... mmmm.
A thin layer of whipped cream under the marzipan, then a layer of flavorful light-as-air vanilla genoise, a layer of cloud-like whipped cream on top of rich custard, cake layer, raspberry jam, cake. It is also very prettily decorated with little purple violet flowers.
It was nice that like the princess cakes, various cakes were available by the slice.
They have pretty petit fours also. Today they had apricot, blueberry and mocha. The blueberry was nice with blueberry jam between vanilla cake and white icing with a litle blue flower on top.
I snagged what had to be the last hot cross bun of the season which was pretty good. There was a generous and good custard cross. The bun had just enough touches of chopped candied fruit for color and raisins. The only thing I could have done without was the glaze which made it a bit sticky.
They had some very pretty tulip-shaped iced sugar cookies and regular large cookies like oatmeal-raisin, chocolate chip and ... peanut butter chocolate chip ... really tempting.
There are a few other pastries and coffee and espresso drinks. IMO, a better choice than the Starbucks next door.
This is a very pleasant bakery, it's walls painted with flowers and large sunny windows looking out on the street. There are some bistro tables inside.
The woman who waited on me was very nice. She got out a map and gave me directions to a restaurant I was going to and gave me change for the parking meter.
I'll definately stop by any time I'm in Martinez ... and that's probably where I'll go the next time I want to buy a princess cake. Website is on the linked Place record.
