Just went to On the Marsh (Kennebunk). On Weds night you can order a three course dinner for only $29.95 (or order off regular menu if you choose). The atmosphere is really lovely, dining rooms look out onto grounds and river, and seating is very comfortable.
What pleased us the most was the range of choices for the prix fix. Two choices for appetizer (salad or soup of the day), for entrees there were 3 choices and all were from their regular menu (the beef tenderloin is $34 on menu, so $29.95 for three courses is exceptional deal) and included beef tenderloin, roasted wild salmon or ragout over pasta; and for dessert you could select any dessert on the regular menu.
We selected the salad for the appetizer, which was wonderfully fresh, served on a flat plate and wrapped in a thin cucumber slice - very nice presentation. For entree I had the salmon, also very fresh and cooked to perfection. However, the wild rice, which had nice texture, seemed to suffer from a sour note - perhaps too much vinegar and the wild mushrooms were not very flavorful, lacked that full earthy taste.
For dessert one of us had the baked apple in pastry, served warm, with van ice cream - that was delicious. The other dessert, a trio of creme brulee, suffered from a little too heavy a hand on caramelizing the top. It was slightly overdone, and that burnt taste overwhelmed the delicate custard. Think this dessert would have been a winner if top had been golden brown instead of overdone.
Our waiter was very professional, welcoming, and friendly (without being overly so!). He was knowledeable about both the food and wine menus. Service was a tad slow, but we were in no rush and found it to be a very relaxing dinner.
Overall the experience was a good one and we look forward to going back to try their regular menu or their sushi menu on Thursdays. Would highly recommend going on a Wednesday night to take advantage of a terrific value in a relaxing, beautiful setting.
