Two months ago, Mom and I stumbled upon the sister restaurant to Alisal’s El Kora in a strip mall on the north side of Salinas. Much newer and shinier, but also deserted of customers. Sitting down for lunch, the stack of tostadas and the blazing hot green chile salsa confirmed the family resemblance to El Kora’s Nayarit style cooking.
For Mom, a single taco de pescado, $3, on a handmade single ply tortilla. The chunks of fish were crunchy from deep-frying, sort of like fish nuggets. I liked them, my mother did not.
I had the Filete Empapelado, $13, made with pez (filet of black bass). Seasoned with chipotle and topped with shrimp, octopus, mushrooms, corn, and onions then snugged up in aluminum foil to cook. Unveiled, then some cheese lacquered over the top, the plate included some yellow rice, a side salad and tartar sauce. Both the shrimp and the fish were cooked on point. Mom and I liked this dish very much.
