Had dinner Saturday night at Marika. Overall, a delightful experience.
The bad news: 1) When the bill came, it included a significant overcharge (I had a glass of port, they charged me for a bottle!). They took it off the bill, with apologies, but didn't comp anything.
2) The wine list is chaotically organized. Maybe a wine expert would have no problem, but when a five page list switches 4 times from red to white, with references to yet another list, I get confused.
Now, the much more substantial good news. The food is great, and the service is very professional.
I started with the beef cheeks special. These were cooked very slowly in a red wine sauce, and were wonderful. The waiter described them as tasting like short ribs, which they did, a bit; but like really really good short ribs.
For a main course, I had the rack of pork, a dish I had never seen before. It was roasted in an onion crust, and resembled a really really thick pork chop. But it may be the best pork dish I've had. At the waiter's suggestion, I had it rare. It was tender, juicy, cooked perfectly throughout. The onion crust was present, but not overwhelming, and nicely complimented the pork.
My wife had the cod with brandade, which was also very good, but I only had one bite, so I can't give a full report.
For dessert, we had a chocolate cake thing, which was good, but not on a par with the rest of the meal.
