Marigold Kitchen doesn't disappoint

A lovely Spring evening, and a delicious birthday dinner, complete with excellent service. We usually go to Radicchio, but we so enjoyed our last trip to Marigold, so that's where the S.O. made reservations.

They take the oddest combinations, and surprise with how well they go together. Anchovey salad with blood oranges - perfect combination of sweet and savory. Halibut in pastry. Oddly enough, the previous evening, I'd had basically the same thing (bass en crout) at a popular French place in San Francisco (Plouf) and the pastry was a heavy and a little underdone, and the sauce was overwhelmingly sweet. Marigold's version was perfect - the pastry airy and crisp, the fish tender, and the sauce (mushroom) light but still tasty. The contrast was startling - and the SF chowhounds rave about Plouf.

Plus good, knowledgable unobstrusive service, our own (affordable) $23 bottle of pinot grigot, and a managable noise level.

Although I appreciate the chowhounds in other cities, who rarely steer me wrong, it's good to be home!
