Went to Maria Bonita today (North Cambridge, on Mass Ave right where the bike path crosses it), after realizing that it's only a 15 minute walk from my office by Alewife. Cute, friendly place, so I wanted to like the food, and of course one visit isn't enough to support a conclusive judgment.
But wow, that was a bad carnitas burrito. There was nothing visibly wrong with the ingredients or the construction, but actually eating it quickly revealed pervasive flaws. Room-temperature, palate-neutral rice; pork with the texture of just-undercooked chicken and the flavor of chewy air; deadeningly pasty beans; salsa and guacamole that added color and dampness but no taste; and a tortilla that the other ingredients had reduced to petulant clamminess despite my having watched it get steamed less than 180 seconds before I took my first bite. I could swear I saw some cheese go in, too, but it apparently escaped during assembly.
If anybody has reason to believe that this was an anomalously disappointing experience, please report.
